According to Jean Ziegler, the former UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, the right to food protects “the right of all human beings to live in dignity, free from hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition (http://www.righttofood.org/new/html/WhatRighttofood.html).”  It is a right that is protected by human rights law as well as humanitarian law but seemingly is one of the more difficult rights to enforce and food security is an ever-present issue in a number of countries including the United States. Rates of malnutrition are a serious concern as is the significant number of women and children dying from a lack of proper nutrition.

Goals of this module:

  • Introduce students to the topic of the right to food while engaging them with pertinent sources of information as well as laws.
  • Give students a background in tactics that have been used to fight for food justice and invite them to critically examine the possible effectiveness of other tactics.
  • Provide students with the opportunity to engage with the issue and materials at a deeper level through exercises and activities at local and global levels.
  • Provide students with practical means by which to address the issue of the right to food as well as a means by which to apply tactics used by NGOs to combat this issue across the world.
